Science Fiction or Sci-Fi is one of the most popular genres in film and television. They can give us a hypothetical look on what could possibly happen in the future besides entertaining us with very interesting plots that will keep you riveted. The following are five of the best futuristic (sci-fi) shows for 2019.

The Umbrella Academy

This series is based on the comic book series of the same name created by Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba. It is centered on a group of adopted super-powered siblings who came together to solve the mystery of their adoptive father’s death and stop the apocalypse. It has an ensemble cast consisting of Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castaneda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Cameron Britton and Mary J. Bilge.

Westworld

This series is based on the 1973 film written and directed by author Michael Crichton. It takes place in the titular fictional, technologically-advanced amusement park with a Wild West theme and the populace is made up of androidhosts who entertain guests who come to Westworld to fulfill their fantasies by following a pre-programmed set of narratives but may deviate depending on how the guests interact with them. Some of these hosts have the ability to retain the memory of past events which gradually makes them self-aware. The show features an ensemble cast consisting of Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, James Marsden, Ed Harris and Luke Hemsworth.

The Passage

The series centers on Amy Bellafonte (Saniyya Sidney), a test subject of a secret experiment called Project Noah supposed to cure all diseases but may annihilate the human race. Bellafonte is helped by Federal agent Brad Wolgast (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) in escaping. Together, they have to contend with obstacles along the way, most especially a dangerous new race of beings confined in the walls of Project Noah. Other cast members include Jamie McShane, Caroline Chikezie, Emmanuel Chiriqui, McKinley Belcher III, Henry Ian Cusick and Vincent Piazza.

Black Mirror

This sci-fi series from the United Kingdom examines modern society, with particular attention to the unexpected consequences of new technologies to people and the settings are usually set in the near future or an alternative present. The episodes are stand-alone and does not lead to the next one. Some have a dark and satirical tone while others may be lighter and experimental. As a result, the cast members vary. The series is inspired by series like the Twilight Zone. Some of the actors who appeared here are Rory Kinnear, Rupert Everett, Toby Kebbell, Jodie Whittaker, Hayley Atwell, Domhnall Gleeson, and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Stranger Things

This series is set in the early 1980s in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. It started when a scientific experiment opened a portal to another dimension called Upside Down which affects the town’s residents. Further seasons show the relationship of these residents with beings from Upside Down with numerous twists and turns along the way. The series boasts of an impressive cast led by Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Woodward and Millie Bobby Brown to name a few.
